ABOUT AFRICAN MOON
PRODUCER
AGRI EVOLVE
Established in 2016 in the Rwenzori Mountains, Agri Evolve transformed local coffee production by becoming a reliable collection point for cherries. Initially, they worked to shift farmers from traditional home-processing to selling ripe cherries. By investing in modern equipment, greenhouses, and demonstration farms, they significantly elevated regional quality. Today, Agri Evolve is a trusted community partner, renowned for paying fair prices consistently and on time. Their efforts support the livelihoods of local families while preserving the region’s unique coffee heritage.
PROCESS
NATURAL
Historically, local farmers processed coffee themselves by sun-drying cherries on tarpaulins. Since 2016, Agri Evolve has transformed this practice by establishing a central collection point for ripe cherries. They invested in modern infrastructure, including mechanical dryers, washer separators, and greenhouses, to refine the drying process. This transition to a professional, centralised operation significantly enhanced quality while supporting the community’s heritage and local livelihoods.
VARIETAL
SL14, SL28
African Moon features the historic SL14 and SL28 varietals. Both originated in the 1930s at Kenya’s Scott Agricultural Laboratories. SL14, a Typica-related variety, was specifically selected for its cold and drought tolerance. SL28, a Bourbon-related "prize selection," is famed for its "exceptional" quality and extreme rusticity, with some trees remaining productive for over 80 years. Today, these hardy varietals are economically vital to Uganda, delivering a vibrant cup that reflects the region's heritage.
ROASTER'S NOTES
APPROACH
African Moon is a familiar friend, we bought the previous harvest and we're back for more. Uganda is the natural birthplace of the Robusta coffee species, which still grows wild in the country's rainforests. Traditionally dominated by commercial Robusta, over the last decade Uganda has quietly been investing in specialty arabica and African Moon comes from The Rwenzori Mountains in the Southwest, known as the "Mountains of the Moon,". This region sits along the border with the DRC. The high altitudes (up to 2,400 MASL) and fertile volcanic soils contribute to the cup quality. This coffee surprises and delights, which is why we are back for more.
